Jesus Christ is Lord: An Exposition of Philippians 2:5-11

Philippians 2:6 says, Jesus “being in the form of God, thought it not robbery to be equal with God” ( (KJV).  “In the beginning was the Word and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.  He was in the beginning with God” (John 1:1-5 ).  Jesus is God and He was there at the creation of the world.  And He wasn’t just a spectator, but the world was created through Him (Hebrews 1:2). Jesus is the radiance of the glory of God and the exact imprint of His nature, and He upholds the universe by the word of His power (Hebrews 1:3).  However, Philippians 2:7 tells us that He “made Himself of no reputation, and took upon Himself the form of a servant, and was made in the likeness of men” (KJV).  The Word became flesh and dwelt among us, “and we have seen His glory, glory as of the only Son from the Father, full of grace and truth” (John 1:14).

Philippians 2:8 says, “And being found in human form, He humbled Himself by becoming obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross.”  Who was Jesus obedient to? Matthew 26:39 tells us that Jesus prayed, “My Father, if it be possible, let this cup pass from me; nevertheless, not as I will, but as You will.”  He was submitting Himself to the Father.  Did God force Him to do this or did Jesus have a choice? In John 10:17-18 Jesus says, “I lay down My life that I may take it up again.  No one takes it from Me, but I lay it down of my own accord.  I have authority to lay it down, and I have authority to take it up again.  This charge I have received from My Father.”  And so, Jesus died a horrible death on a cross.  He bore His cross to Golgotha, the Place of the Skull and there they crucified Him. (John 19:17-18). “Surely, He has borne our griefs and carried our sorrows; yet we esteemed Him stricken, smitten by God, and afflicted.  But He was pieced for our transgressions; He was crushed for our iniquities; upon Him was the chastisement that brought us peace, and with His wounds we are healed” Isaiah 53:4-5.

“Therefore, God has highly exalted Him and bestowed on Him the name that is above every name, so that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in Heaven and on earth and under the earth, and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father” (Philippians 2:9-11). Jesus did not remain in the grave.  As He said in the book of John, Jesus lay down His life to take it up again (John 10:17-18).  Christ died for our sins, He was buried, and He was raised on the third day in accordance with the Scriptures (1 Corinthians 15:3-4).  Hebrews 1:3b-4 tells us that “after making purification for sins, He sat down at the right hand of the Majesty on high, having become as much superior to angels as the name He has inherited is more excellent than theirs.”  We will all stand before the judgment seat of God and there every knee will bow, and every tongue will confess that Jesus Christ is Lord (Isaiah 45:23 and Romans 14:10-11).
