Week 1 Day 1:

Pray: Begin your study with a time of prayer.  As we will learn in this study, it is the Lord who gives us understanding (2 Timothy 2:7).  He is the one who teaches us His statutes (Psalm 119) and you can do nothing apart from Him (John 15:5).  So, begin your study today, and every day, by going to the Lord in prayer.

Read: When you receive an email or a letter from a friend, you read it all in one sitting.  You read it straight through, eager to hear all the sender has to say.  So today, fix a cup of tea, get comfy, and read the book of 2 Timothy straight through. Savor your time in the Word of God.

Apply: The Bible calls us to be doers of the Word, and not hearers only (James 1:22).  Hiding God’s Word in your heart is a critical step in being a doer of the Word.  Psalm 119:11 says, “I have stored up Your Word in my heart, that I might not sin against You.”  How can you meditate on, how can you obey, how can you live by what you do not know by heart?  So, let’s memorize God’s Word together.

This week Memorize 2 Timothy 2:15, “Be diligent to present yourselves approved to God as a workman who does not need to be ashamed, accurately handling the Word of truth.”

Week 1 Day 2:

Pray: Lord, we know that all Scripture is inspired by You and is profitable for teaching, reproof, correction, and training in righteousness; so that we may be adequate, equipped for every good work.  In our study time today, help us to be diligent to present ourselves approved to God as a workman who does not need to be ashamed, accurately handling the Word of truth.

Read: Today you are going to read through the book of 2 Timothy again.  Our brains absorb information differently when we read material and when we listen to material.  So today, try to listen to the book.  Read it aloud with a friend, listen to an audio reading (the BibleGateway and BlueLetterBible apps both have free audio versions of the Bible available), or read the book aloud to yourself.  When you finish reading, answer the questions below.

  1. The Bible is composed of different forms of literature.  For example, the book of Psalms is poetry, the book of Genesis is history, and the book of Colossians is a letter.  What kind of literary writing is the book of 2 Timothy?
  2. All scripture is inspired by God (2 Timothy 3:16), but He used many different men throughout history to write each book of the Bible.  Who wrote the book of 2 Timothy?
  3. Who was Paul writing to?
  4. Last question for today.  Knowing why someone does something is often just as important as knowing what they have done.  So, did you see a verse (or verses) that said why Paul was writing to Timothy?  If so, write out the verses below.

Apply: Why are you studying Second Timothy? Think about it for a few minutes and really decide why.  Write it out.

Do your reasons for studying God’s Word line up with what you have read in 2 Timothy today?  If not read over 2 Timothy 2:15 and 3:16-17 again and ask God to change your heart and then, Keep Studying!!

Continue to memorize 2 Timothy 2:15, “Be diligent to present yourselves approved to God as a workman who does not need to be ashamed, accurately handling the Word of truth.”

Week 1 Day 3:

Pray: Start your study with a time of prayer.  Read Psalm 19:7-11 and thank God for everything that His Word is to you.

Read: Today you are going to read the book of 2 Timothy again.  As you read, underline every reference to Paul with a blue pen.

Now, in the space provided, make a list of everything you learned about Paul in the book of 2 Timothy. I will get you started.

Paul is:

  1. an apostle of Christ Jesus (2 Timothy 1:1)

Apply: Read over your list about Paul.  Does he describe his life as being easy?  What about your life? When you became a believer did you expect your life to be easy? Why does Paul say he is suffering; who is he suffering for?  So, I ask you, is your life easy?  Should it be? Journal your answers below.

Week 1 Day 4:

Pray: Start your study time in prayer.  Thank God for something specific that He has taught you this week.  Thank God that as a believer, the veil has been removed and with unveiled face, you are beholding the glory of the Lord, and being transformed into the same image from one degree of glory to another, for this comes from the Lord who is the Spirit (2 Corinthians 3:16-18).

Read: Today we are going to read the book of 2 Timothy again. (Has the flow of the book begun take shape for you?  Isn’t the power of repetition amazing!) As you read, underline every reference to Timothy with an orange pen or pencil.

Now, in the space provided, make a list of everything you learned about Timothy. I will get you started:

  1. Timothy has sincere faith (2 Timothy 1:5)

Apply: Read back through your list on Timothy.  How is Timothy described?  Could your life be described like this?  What can you change in your life today so that you, like Timothy, can follow the examples Scripture has set before us to become more like Christ?  Journal your answers below.  Don’t forget to review your memory verse.

Week 1 Day 5:

Pray: Begin your study in prayer.  Has God been convicting you of any changes you need to make.  If so, then don’t be discouraged for this is an evidence of salvation in your life (Hebrews 12:7-11). Therefore, lift your drooping hands and strengthen your weak knees, and make straight paths for your feet, so that what is lame may not be put out of joint but rather be healed (Hebrews 12:12-13)!

Read: Today you are going to read the book of 2 Timothy a final time.  As you read make a list of all the key words you see repeated over and over.  These repeated words give us insight into what the book is about.  We will look at the words more in the coming weeks but for now just list them below.

Apply: Today I challenge you to share one thing you have learned with someone else.  Call a friend and tell them about Paul a prisoner for the Lord, suffering for the gospel.  Ask your spouse if you can say your memory verse to them.  Text a friend and tell them about a change you are making in your life so that you reflect the teaching of God’s Word.  Let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in Heaven (Matthew 5:16).
